Progress: Aug-2004

  • So the new engine mounts are slightly taller than the old ones (a good thing), but the extra quarter-inch isn't enough for the oil pan to clear the crossmember (a bad thing). My dad talked to a guy who had his Chevelle in their shop about his oil pan, and it looks alot different from my Mr. Gasket one (mine has a slope down to the sump, where his is flat....and this slope is where it is hitting). We figure that we simply need the correct oil pan and all of our issues should be solved (of course with our luck, nothing is ever that easy). I will work on ordering the correct one. We're still going to keep these new engine mounts, however, because they seem a lot better quality and can only help our clearance issues.
  • Since we have to remove the engine to change the pan anyway, we are going to take this opportunity to get the new tranny for it. I am also going to work on ordering a rebuilt Muncie M20 and trying to get that here within the next little bit. I originally was thinking about a 5spd Tremec (with overdrive), but it would end up costing about $3000 by the time it got here (shipping, duty, and exchange). The muncies are about $1300 all told, which is pretty reasonable. And with an M20, I can run less of a rear-gear (since it's got wider ratios) which means better highway RPMs (the biggest advantage to the 5spd w/ OD). Hopefully it won't be a huge hassle trying to find a good tranny...

  • Amazing! In less than a week, I got a brand new rebuilt M20 at my doorstep. I contacted a guy named Bob Bartlett out of Batavia, Illinois who owns a company called 4 Gear Trans Co. This guy was really great and really went the extra mile to make sure the whole transaction was smooth for both of us. I would highly recommend him to anyone looking for muncie stuff...he seems like a real stand-up guy. I will post pictures and update my cost page in a bit here (still have to wait on the final shipping rates from FedEx).
  • I think I found the correct oil pan that fits my car, so I'm going to try and order that this week. If I get by early next week, we can be putting this car on the road real soon hopefully...
