- Finally! Got my income tax back (hey, there are some advantages to being a student) and am now working on the engine. We sent it out to get done, and it should be back by the end of the month. We are getting it over-bored (with new pistons, rods, etc.), getting a new cam shaft, new intake manifold and a new carb. The engine is also going to be cleaned up a bit. It should cost around $2500 or so. I was planning to take before and after pictures of the new parts, but I think that they are going to put the short block together...hey it saves us time ;).
- We had an option to get some really good heads from the same guy, but they were going to cost $600 each, so we decided that for now we'll just send our heads that we originally had on there to get rebuilt (at about $100 a piece). We can always go and buy some performace heads after...can you say aluminum?
- After this whole thing, I should still have about $1000 left to spend on the drive train. Not enough for everything I want, but if I was a rich man:
- One major thing we'll need is a transmission. I've found a really good transmission on the web, but it's a bit pricy. It's a Tremec tranny, and was originally built for Mustangs, but this guy does GM conversions. It's a true 5 speed overdrive manual tranny, that can handle a lot of torque. However, it is about $US2000, so that's about $3500-4000 by the time it gets to my door. We might have to settle for now for a used 4 speed with no overdrive just to get this thing on the road (the Saginaw 3 speed it came with died last year).
- I would also like to get some headers. It would be nice while the engine is out to put the headers on. It might save us some hassle doing it now as opposed to doing it when the engine is back in.
